What Are RTS Cabinets and What Are They Used For?

RTS Cabinets are used by healthcare facilities to store drugs at room temperature

Ambient, CRT (Controlled Room Temperature) and RTS (Room Temperature Storage) cabinets are essentially the same product – they ensure medicines that need to be kept at “room temperature” are stored correctly between +15°C and +25°C.

The different names are simply a result of the medical industry not outlining a preferred term for the cabinets. At CoolMed, we refer to the products as RTS cabinets.

What are RTS Cabinets Used For?

If medicines and other drugs are not stored correctly, they may lose their potency and not work in the way they were intended. This can pose a potential risk to the health and wellbeing of the person receiving the medicine.

Temperature is one of the most important factors to consider when storing medication. Temperature fluctuations can severely affect the stability of a medicine, so it must be controlled and measured at all times.

RTS cabinets ensure that medicines intended for storage at “room temperature” are kept within their optimum temperature range of +15°C to +25°C. This is especially important for drugs that contain hormones such as birth control pills, chemotherapy drugs, anti-seizure medications and antibiotics. These medications lose their efficacy when exposed to temperatures outside their recommended storage range.

Where are RTS Cabinets Used?

RTS cabinets are used in many healthcare settings such as hospital wards, doctor’s surgeries, pharmacies, healthcare clinics, care homes, veterinary practices and dental surgeries.

Healthcare settings such as these will store numerous different medicines, many of which will need storing at “room temperature”. Room temperature can vary significantly from building to building and due to factors such as sunlight exposure, humidity, season and time of day.

To ensure an ambient temperature of +15°C to +25°C is achieved and maintained, RTS cabinets are used. RTS cabinets ensure healthcare providers comply with drug manufacturer’s storage recommendations and eliminate fluctuations in room temperature due to excessive sunlight or cold spells.

How do RTS Cabinets Work?

At CoolMed, our RTS cabinets are designed to keep contents stored between +15°C to +25°C (ambient room temperature) and are stabilised by high-quality temperature sensors. Our fridges record minimum and maximum temperatures when plugged into a power source but will continue to operate if the power source fails due to a battery backup that is installed in a side panel.

If the temperature inside one of our RTS cabinets exceeds +25°C an alarm will sound. Similarly, if the temperature dips below +15°C an alarm will also sound to alert practitioners of the problem. The alarm will also sound if the cabinet door is accidentally left open or isn’t shut correctly. This ensures products inside the cabinet are kept safe and maintain their efficacy.
